A total of 76 couples were married in a mass wedding ceremony in the eastern Afghanistan Wardak province.
Financed by a local charity agency Silab, and held in Wardak provincial capital Maidan Shar city, some of the couples could not afford the marriage expenses due to poverty, although they got engaged six or seven years ago, the local media outlet Tolonews reported Thursday night.
A groom Bakhtiar Maaz lamented that after several years, he was able to arrange his marriage ceremony in a mass wedding supported by Silab relief agency and he felt happy.
In the war-torn Afghanistan, where about 23 million out of nearly 36 million population of the country reportedly face food insecurity. Arranging a marriage is very expensive, as a groom’s family has to invite hundreds of guests, even in some cases more than 1,000 guests to attend the ceremony on the wedding night.
The Afghan interim government’s supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada has banned extra expenses in wedding ceremonies to reduce unnecessary financial burden on the engaged families.
