The Indian Army, in coordination with the civil administration, has completed construction of a Bailey bridge at Limchigad, restoring connectivity after the original was washed away in the August 5 cloudburst in Uttarkashi’s Dharali.
A Bailey bridge is a modular structure that can be assembled quickly using pre-fabricated components.
The bridge, capable of carrying up to 50 tonnes, was completed Sunday despite heavy rain hampering operations. Teams from the police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), engineers, and the Army’s Bengal Engineers Group worked round the clock, alongside search, medical, and communication units.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced the opening of the bridge on X, saying it would speed up the delivery of relief materials and machinery while resuming smooth movement for local residents.
Authorities are also clearing road blockages at Songad, Dabrani, Harsil, and Dharali. Helicopter evacuations, slowed by rain, have so far airlifted 1,273 people from Dharali and Harsil since Wednesday.
