The 45-day-long Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, also known as the largest congregation of humanity, began in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj on the auspicious occasion of Paush Purnima on Monday.
An estimated 1.5 crore devotees will gather at the sacred Sangam—the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers—to take a holy dip, symbolising spiritual purification.
Maha Kumbh Special For Many Reasons
This year’s Maha Kumbh holds immense significance, occurring after a 12-year cycle and commencing under the rare planetary alignment of Pushya Nakshatra — a sacred configuration last witnessed 144 years ago.
The inaugural days include two extended Shahi (Amrit) Snans—on Paush Purnima (January 13) and Makar Sankranti (January 14)—drawing millions to Sangam.
District Magistrate Vijay Kiran Anand said: “All preparations are in place, with a robust seven-layer security plan transforming the area into a fortress. Over the course of the 45-day event, an estimated 40 crore devotees are expected to participate, with six Amrit Snans punctuating the spiritual calendar.”
In addition to the first two, the remaining Amrit Snans will occur on Mauni Amavasya (January 29), Basant Panchami (February 3), Magh Poornima (February 12), and the concluding day on Mahashivratri (February 26). A highlight of the mela is the grand procession of the 13 Akharas (Hindu monastic orders), who ceremonially enter the sacred Sangam via the Triveni pontoon bridge during each Amrit Snan, adding to the festival’s magnificence.Panchayati Akhara Mahanirvani Seers To Lead First Holy Dip
The seers of Shri Panchayati Akhara Mahanirvani will ceremonially lead the first holy dip at the Maha Kumbh Mela, followed by the participation of Shri Panchayati Atal Akhara, Niranjani Akhara, Anand Akhara, Juna Akhara, Panchnam Dhashnaam Avahan Akhara, Shambhu Panch Agni Akhara, the three Ani Akharas (Nirmohi, Digambar, and Nirwani), Naya Udaseen, Bada Udaseen Akhara, and finally Panchayati Akhara Nirmal. Only after the 13 monastic orders (Akharas) complete their ceremonial dips will common devotees be permitted to take the holy dip.
Over 2 Crore Devotees To Take Part On Amrit Snans
Mela authorities anticipate an average turnout of over two crore devotees on Amrit Snan days, with the number soaring to eight to 10 crore on Mauni Amavasya (January 29), the most spiritually significant day of the Mela.
On the opening day, at least one crore devotees are expected, while the Makar Sankranti (January 14) Rajasi Snan is projected to draw three crore pilgrims.
As per official estimates, the 45-day Mahakumbh is expected to welcome an unprecedented 40 crore pilgrims and visitors. The grand event spans a vast 4,000-hectare area, meticulously organised into 25 sectors, all interconnected by 31 pontoon bridges to ensure seamless movement of the massive crowds.In wake of the security threats, stringent measures have been implemented, transforming the Mela zone into a high-security fortress. Security checks are being conducted on vehicles entering Prayagraj from various directions, and the entry of four-wheelers and two-wheelers into the Mela area has been strictly prohibited. Additional traffic restrictions have been imposed, particularly on pontoon bridges, to manage the heavy inflow of pilgrims.
First Shahi Snan on Tuesday
On Tuesday, an estimated 2.5 crore devotees are expected to participate in the first Rajasi Snan (Amrit Snan), formerly known as Shahi Snan, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. During this ceremonial event, sadhus from all 13 Akharas will sequentially take their holy dip at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers.
The Mela administration has finalised all preparations for the Rajasi Snan and issued a detailed schedule defining the movement order and allotted timings for each Akhara. These measures aim to ensure the smooth execution of this spiritually significant event while maintaining the safety and comfort of pilgrims.
Officials with the UP government said during the Rajasi Snan, flower petals will be ceremoniously showered from helicopters on sadhus and devotees at the designated bathing ghats, adding a festive and spiritual touch to the occasion. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has personally visited the Mela area six times in the past month to oversee and ensure the completion of preparations for the grand event.
A 12-kilometer stretch featuring 48 bathing ghats has been prepared and fortified with water barricades. To prevent any untoward incidents, the area is being monitored by Jal Police and 25 marine commandos from the Indian Navy, providing an additional layer of safety.
18,000 Changing Rooms, 13,000 Trains & 5,500 Buses
For the convenience of pilgrims, 18,000 changing rooms have been installed at the ghats, along with 1.25 lakh toilets to maintain hygiene and sanitation. A robust transportation plan has been put into action, with 13,000 trains, including 3,000 special trains, and 5,500 buses from the Uttar Pradesh State Transport Corporation. An additional 550 shuttle buses are in operation to ensure smooth connectivity within the Mela area. To manage the influx of vehicles, over 100 designated parking areas have been developed at strategic entry points.
