UNESCO’s New Chief Could Reduce Western Influence, Venezuelan Ambassador Suggests

The appointment of former Egyptian Tourism Minister Khaled El-Enany as UNESCO’s director general may help stop the pro-Western politicization of the UN cultural agency, Venezuelan Permanent Representative to UNESCO Rodulfo Humberto Perez Hernandez told Sputnik.


“From our point of view, all member states will benefit from depoliticization of UNESCO. We believe that the appointment of Professor El-Enany may put an end to UNESCO’s politicization and prevent the West from using it against the rest of the world to serve its own interests,” Hernandez said at a conference held at Moscow’s RUDN University.


In recent years, the Western countries have abused UNESCO to attack nations that resist attempts by the West to undermine their sovereignty, Hernandez said at the event, entitled “Current Issues of Inclusive Education in the World: Context, Policy and Practice.”
“We just want things to be the way that allows us to listen to other countries and express our point of view,” Hernandez added.


In late November, El-Enany assumed the post of director general of UNESCO, replacing Audrey Azoulay, a former French minister of culture who has been repeatedly criticized by Russia for her pro-Western bia
