Indian boxers remained a strong force at the Asian U-19 and U-23 Championships, with 16 of them advancing to the finals across men’s and women’s categories and seven others securing bronze medals after semifinal finishes in Jakarta.
In the Under-19 women’s category, 8 boxers reached finals today. Gunjan advanced to the final in the 45-50 kg weight class. Chandrika Pujari in the 51 kg category, Joyshree Chirom in the 54 kg, Prachi in the 57 kg and Chahat in the 60 kg category reached finals. Anshika in the 75 kg, Megha in the 80 kg, and Prachi Tokas in the plus 81 kg category secured their places in the final.
Earlier, in the U-23 women’s category, five Indian boxers progressed to the finals. Nisha in 54kg category defeated Hyeju Lee of Korea, while Nikita Chand in 60kg category registered a win against Sarii Kokufu of Japan. Kajal in 65kg category sailed past Gulzina Melsvek of Kyrgyzstan yesterday.
In the higher weight categories, Muskan in 75kg category won 5:nil against Toirova Oysha of Uzbekistan while Priyanka in plus 80kg recorded a dominant 5:nil win over Panar Seiitkhankyzy Kazakhstan.
In the U-23 men’s category, three Indian boxers advanced to the finals. Vishvanath Suresh in 50kg delivered a commanding 5:nil win over his Philippines opponent, while Ganga in 55kg edged past Japan with a 3:2 split decision. Vanshaj in 65kg also impressed with a 4:1 victory over a Kyrgyzstan opponent to secure his place in the final.
India also added seven bronze medals from semifinal finishes. In the U-23 women’s category, bronze medals were secured by Tanu (51kg), Prachi (57kg), Shivani (70kg), and Naina (80kg).
In the U-23 men’s category, bronze medals were won by Hitesh (70kg, Neeraj (75kg), and Ishan Kataria (PLUS 90kg).
