The Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi organised an event titled ‘Six Yards of India – The Saree Story’ in collaboration with the General Women’s Union (GWU) and the Diplomatic Group for Spouses of Ambassadors at the GWU headquarters in Abu Dhabi.

The event showcased India’s rich textile heritage and the cultural diversity reflected in its traditional sarees, bringing together Indian craftsmanship, fashion and art.

The programme featured a presentation on the history and significance of Indian sarees by Ms. Reema Mahajan, Founder of the Indian Women Association, followed by a session titled ‘Threads of Tomorrow – India Fashion, Reimagined’ by fashion designer Mr. Kaushik Velendra.

A Bharatanatyam demonstration by Ms Rashika Ojha added a cultural dimension to the evening. The programme also included a film and quiz on India, an exhibition of Indian art and an experience of Indian cuisine.

The event highlighted the diversity of India’s traditional weaves, including Banarasi silk, Kanchipuram silk, Mysore silk, Kerala Kasavu, Bandhani, Kalamkari, Bengal’s Tant Saree as well as regional draping styles like Nauvari and Seedha Pallu, offering guests an insight into the country’s centuries-old textile traditions.
