Iran has sent the United States a nuclear proposal through Qatar, but discussions will begin only after Washington meets Tehran’s seven demands. Iranian officials have demanded the lifting of US sanctions, the release of frozen Iranian assets and war reparations, among other conditions. Tehran has also warned it will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz or negotiate until its demands are met. Iran’s top security official Mohsen Rezaei reiterated the conditions during a visit to Russia yesterday. Washington, meanwhile, has insisted that nuclear issues must be included in any initial negotiations. Mediators have stepped up efforts to end the conflict amid fears of renewed fighting. US President Donald Trump has not ruled out resuming military operations after the US midterm elections.
