The Union Cabinet today passed a resolution applauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi for becoming the longest-serving elected Prime Minister in consecutive terms. With four thousand 399 days of continuous service as an elected Prime Minister, Mr. Modi has surpassed the previous record held by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who served for four thousand 398 continuous days.
Briefing the media in New Delhi after the Cabinet meeting, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the resolution marks this historic milestone in Mr. Modi’s continuous service to the nation and outlines several commitments and achievements. He said the Cabinet adopted a seven-point resolution to congratulate the Prime Minister on this landmark achievement.
Highlighting the government’s focus on the welfare of people, the resolution notes that the poor have remained at the centre of governance and details the unprecedented scale of amenities delivered. Mr Vaishnaw said unprecedented efforts have been made to provide pucca houses, electricity, clean drinking water, and direct benefit transfers. He added that more than 80 crore citizens are receiving free foodgrains, while over 60 crore beneficiaries have access to free medical treatment. According to the resolution, these initiatives have strengthened national self-confidence and helped more than 25 crore people move out of poverty.
The resolution further maps the empowerment of key demographics. It notes that a strong focus on youth has helped India emerge as the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem and achieve major scientific milestones, including the Chandrayaan mission. It also underscores the government’s commitment to women-led development through initiatives such as smoke-free kitchens, the Lakhpati Didi campaign, and the passage of legislation providing 33 per cent reservation for women in legislative bodies.
Recognising farmers as a key pillar of a Viksit Bharat, the resolution commends initiatives such as the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi and the extension of Kisan Credit Cards to livestock rearers and fishermen. It notes that these measures have contributed to agricultural exports crossing the five lakh crore rupees mark. The resolution also credits programmes such as Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat for strengthening India’s manufacturing capabilities in sectors ranging from defence to artificial intelligence.
Meanwhile, the Union Cabinet has approved Phase 2(A) of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, covering the Koteshwar Road to Airport corridor. The project includes a metro corridor of over six kilometres with five stations. Mr. Vaishnaw said that upon completion, the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network will expand to around 78 kilometres, providing seamless connectivity to the airport and significantly improving public transport.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has also approved two major Central Government infrastructure projects in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh. These include the construction of Central Government General Pool Office Accommodation and General Pool Residential Accommodation. The projects are expected to generate substantial direct and indirect employment opportunities for skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled workers.
