Former Prime Minister #ManmohanSingh was laid to rest with #FullStateHonours at #NigambodhGhat in Delhi’s Kashmere Gate on Saturday. The solemn ceremony was attended by his family, friends, colleagues, and top government dignitaries.
President #DroupadiMurmu, Prime Minister #NarendraModi, Union Home Minister #AmitShah, and Defence Minister #RajnathSingh paid their last respects by placing wreaths near his mortal remains earlier in the day.
The last rites were conducted at the #VIPGhat following #SikhRituals. Dr. Singh’s mortal remains were placed on a sandalwood pyre, symbolizing his reverence and stature.
#Congress chief #MallikarjunKharge, along with #SoniaGandhi and #RahulGandhi, attended the cremation ceremony after offering their tributes to the late leader at the #AICCHeadquarters earlier in the morning.
A large crowd gathered at the former PM’s residence in Delhi and the AICC headquarters to pay their final respects.
Congress leader #MadhusudanMistry praised Dr. Singh for his lasting contributions, stating, “He made lifelong laws that benefited crores of people. His demise is a loss for everyone.”
Congress leader #MumtazPatel described him as a “great man and a strong, kind leader.” She added, “People called him a weak Prime Minister, but that was wrong. He always worked for the country.”
Congress MP #ManishTewari reflected on the loss, saying, “Today is a very poignant moment. A very fine person, a renowned economist, a world statesperson, is no longer with us… He lived a very noble and simple life. May his soul rest in peace.”
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister #DKShivakumar lauded Dr. Singh for bringing several “revolutions” during his tenure. He reiterated the former PM’s words, emphasizing that his work and legacy would be remembered.
Following a Cabinet meeting on Friday, Home Minister Amit Shah informed Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Dr. Singh’s family that the Government would allocate space for a #MemorialForManmohanSingh. While the cremation proceeded, a trust will be formed to oversee the memorial’s establishment.
Dr. Singh’s illustrious political career included serving as #FinanceMinister from 1991 to 1996, where he spearheaded transformative #EconomicReforms that modernized India’s economy. He served as India’s #13thPrimeMinister from 2004 to 2014, succeeding #AtalBihariVajpayee. His tenure is particularly remembered for his steady leadership during economic crises and his efforts to elevate India’s global standing.
After completing two terms as Prime Minister, Dr. Singh retired from public life, leaving behind a legacy of unprecedented growth and modernization. He was succeeded by Narendra Modi after the Congress-led #UPA lost the 2014 general elections.
