Iran has sent a message to the United States outlining seven conditions for opening the Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian news agency Tasnim reported citing an informed source.
Earlier, the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced that Tehran would hold a meeting on Monday, in Oman involving Iraq and Persian Gulf states to discuss safe routes for commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
“Until these seven conditions, which have been approved by Iran’s top officials, are met, the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed,” the source told the agency.
As Tasnim previously reported, the agreements reached between Iran and Oman regarding the Strait of Hormuz did not provide for the opening of this waterway. Under the agreement, the parties have coordinated the primary entry and exit routes for the Strait of Hormuz.
On February 28, the US and Israel began striking targets in Iran, prompting retaliatory strikes from the Iranian side. In mid-June, Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum to cease hostilities, but later exchanged strikes once again. At present, the conflict remains unresolved.
Due to the escalation of the conflict, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has virtually come to a halt. This is a key supply route for oil, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas to the global market. As a result, fuel prices have risen in most countries around the world.
