Peace negotiations between the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand are currently underway in Malaysia, aimed at brokering a ceasefire in their ongoing and intense border conflict. The talks are being held at the official residence of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya, the country’s administrative capital. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is hosting the meeting in his capacity as chair of the regional bloc ASEAN.
Tensions flared last week, with both Thailand and Cambodia accusing each other of initiating hostilities and escalating the violence through heavy artillery shelling across the disputed stretch along their 817-kilometre shared border. Speaking to reporters in Scotland last night, U.S. President Donald Trump said he had warned both nations that future trade agreements with Washington would be suspended if the fighting continues. He also expressed hope, stating that the talks in Malaysia represent a positive step toward de-escalation.
