Pakistani Taliban Seize Military Checkpost in Bajaur Amid Army’s Domestic Preoccupations

In a concerning development, new videos circulating on social media show members of the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) taking control of a military checkpost in Bajaur, a tribal district near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. The footage, which has gone viral, highlights the growing instability in Pakistan’s border regions as the TTP escalates its activities.

Renowned journalist Taha Siddiqui, writing on X (formerly Twitter), attributed this recurring failure to the Pakistan Army’s focus on domestic politics and suppression of dissent, diverting attention from its primary role of safeguarding the nation’s borders.

Bajaur, part of Pakistan’s tribal belt, has been a hotspot for militant activity for years. Despite numerous military operations aimed at eradicating terrorism, the region remains vulnerable, with militants often exploiting weak security measures to stage attacks or seize control of strategic locations.

The Pakistan Army’s involvement in domestic politics is a significant factor in its inability to counter insurgent threats effectively. The military has faced accusations of meddling in political affairs, from influencing elections to targeting opposition parties and activists. This preoccupation has reportedly stretched its resources and distracted it from its core responsibility of defending the nation’s borders. Instances like the Bajaur checkpost takeover only underscore these lapses.

The TTP has intensified its activities since the collapse of peace talks with the government in late 2022. According to a report by the Pakistan Institute for Peace Studies, militant attacks in Pakistan surged by 51% in 2023 compared to the previous year, with the TTP being responsible for a significant portion. Bajaur’s strategic location makes it a critical point of concern. Analysts warn that losing control over such areas could embolden the TTP further, posing a serious threat to national security.

As incidents like the Bajaur takeover persist, questions surrounding the Pakistan Army’s effectiveness and priorities are likely to grow louder. For Pakistan to ensure its territorial integrity, its armed forces must refocus on their foundational role of protecting the nation.
