Russia has launched a massive wave of strikes against Ukraine, unleashing hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles in which at least four people were killed and 80 people sustained injuries, Ukrainian authorities said on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Russia confirmed on Sunday it had launched an Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile at Ukraine in the overnight strikes on Sunday. Notably, this is the third time the nuclear-capable weapon has been used in the four-year war.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv was the main target, but other areas were also hit, with at least 83 people injured. There are reports of damage to residential buildings and schools.
Calling it a retailtory strike on Ukraine, Russia’s defence ministry said the Oreshnik hypersonic missile was used in the strikes, which it described as coming in response to Ukraine’s “attacks on civilian infrastructure”, Sputnik reported.
“In response to Ukraine’s terrorist attacks on civilian infrastructure on Russian territory, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation carried out a massive strike using Oreshnik ballistic missiles, Iskander air-launched ballistic missiles, Kinzhal hypersonic air-launched ballistic missiles and Tsirkon cruise missiles,” as well as drones, the defence ministry said in a statement.It reportedly travels at more than 10 times the speed of sound, is impossible to intercept, and is known to be capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads, Al Jazeera reported.
“No strikes were planned or carried out on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure,” the ministry said in a statement.
The Russian forces struck Ukrainian military-industrial complex facilities, military infrastructure, command posts of the Ground Forces Main Command, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry and other command posts of the Ukrainian armed forces,Sputnik reported quoting the ministry.
President Vladimir Putin has accused Ukraine of a deadly strike on a student dormitory in the town of Starobilsk on Friday, in which 21 people were killed.
The general staff of Ukraine’s armed forces said it did carry out an attack near Starobilsk in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine overnight on Friday, but maintained that it struck an elite Russian military unit.
European leaders have condemned the overnight Russian strikes on Sunday, which came after warnings from Zelensky that Russia was planning an attack, and that it may have been preparing to use the Oreshnik missile
Zelensky said in a Telegram post on Sunday that Russia had launched the Oreshnik missile against the city of Bila Tserkva in the Kyiv region.
