The Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to investigate the murder of journalist Mukesh Chandrakar has arrested the main accused, Suresh Chandrakar, during a late-night operation in Hyderabad on Monday. This brings the total number of arrests in the case to four.
Mukesh Chandrakar, known for his bold investigative journalism, was reported missing on New Year’s Day and later found dead in a septic tank at a road contractor’s property in Bijapur district. He had recently exposed corruption in a Rs 120 crore road project in the Bastar region, which may have led to his murder.
The project, initially valued at Rs 50 crore, had ballooned to Rs 120 crore without any change in the work’s scope, with Suresh Chandrakar, a contractor, reportedly involved. Suresh, who had been on the run, was arrested in Hyderabad. Earlier, his cousin Ritesh Chandrakar, along with two other suspects, was arrested in connection with the murder. Ritesh had allegedly arranged a meeting between Suresh and Mukesh on January 1, after which Mukesh’s phone went offline, and he was reported missing.
Mukesh’s body was discovered two days later in a septic tank on a property owned by Suresh. The SIT team, which had been investigating the case, also seized three bank accounts linked to Suresh Chandrakar.
