Reports from Islamabad have surfaced, revealing the alarming arrest of Afghan refugees, including women and children, by Pakistan’s military authorities. Disturbingly, many of those detained possess valid legal documents issued by the United Nations and SHARP (Society for Human Rights and Prisoners’ Aid). Despite this, they are being rounded up arbitrarily, exposing the Pakistani government’s disregard for its humanitarian obligations.
This brutal crackdown is not just an isolated incident; it is a part of Pakistan’s long-standing “strategic depth” policy. For decades, this strategy has destabilized Afghanistan through political interference, orchestrated coups in Kabul, and fueling ongoing conflicts. This relentless meddling has uprooted millions of Afghans, forcing them to flee their homeland and seek refuge in neighboring countries, including Pakistan.
The Punjabi Pak Army elite, notorious for exploiting human misery, continues to profit from the suffering of displaced communities. Refugees who escape the horrors of war are now facing even more hardship in Pakistan, where they are arrested without cause, subjected to extortion, and forced to pay bribes for their release.
Such actions expose the exploitative nature of the Pakistani military-industrial complex. Wars are deliberately engineered to create a continuous flow of displaced people, who then become a source of profit for the military. Afghan refugees, already traumatized by the violence they’ve fled, are now subjected to further humiliation and persecution in Pakistan—a cruel extension of the misery they’ve already endured.
The brutality against Afghan refugees is being unequivocally condemned on Twitter, with global voices calling for justice. Numerous tweets have surfaced, denouncing the inhumane treatment of Afghan women, children, and families who sought refuge in Pakistan, only to face arbitrary arrests and exploitation
Habib Khan, founder of Afghan Peace Watch, tweeted, “When Afghan women and girls flee Taliban tyranny, Pakistan jails them en masse. Despite UNHCR funding for Afghan refugees, Pakistan is treating them like animals. These mass arrests blatantly violate international humanitarian laws- @HabibKhanT”
Ziar Khan Yaadaf, a former journalist with TOLOnews, shared on his X handle @ziaryaad, “An Afghan woman in Islamabad suffered a heart attack in detention after her arrest. Pakistani police also detained dozens of women and children in ongoing operations against undocumented Afghan refugees. This crackdown targets those who fled Taliban persecution and must stop.”
The international community must step in and hold Pakistan accountable for its actions. It’s time to stop this cycle of exploitation and demand justice for the vulnerable communities suffering at the hands of the Pakistani establishment.
