Saif Ali Khan, known for his roles in ‘Omkara’, ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ and ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’, sustained major injury in his spine after a thief attacked him with a knife at his residence in Mumbai’s Bandra in the wee hours of Thursday.
Dr Nitin Dange of Lilavati Hospital said that the Bollywood star was admitted to the hospital around 2AM with “alleged history of assault by some unknown person”. “He sustained a major injury to the thoracic spinal cord due to a lodged knife in the spine. A surgery was performed to remove the knife and repair leaking spinal fluid. Two other deep wounds on his left hand and one other on his neck were repaired by the plastic surgery team. He is completely stable now. He is recovering well and out of danger now,” he added.
The attack on Khan has shocked people across India, including fellow actors and politicians. Sources say that the attacker stayed at Khan’s residence “all night”. He was allegedly trying to enter son Jeh’s room when the caretaker screamed and Saif Ali Khan rushed in. The thief stabbed the actor during the scuffle and fled.
Doctors had earlier in the day said that the actor received six stab wounds, of which two are deep. One of the deep wounds is close to the spine, Dr Niraj Uttamani, COO of Lilavati Hospital, added. Sources said that the police questioned the workers who had been visiting Saif’s residence since two days as floor polishing work was underway. Three staffers of the actor have already been questioned, while reports said that one woman employee was also injured in the incident.
