Philippine facing risk of waterborne diseases after floods

Philippine health authorities have issued an alert on water-borne diseases after floods hit the northern part of the country. The local health centre in the Ilocos region has warned residents of rising health risks as enhanced southwest monsoon rains continue to trigger flooding across the region. Residents were urged to guard against water-borne illnesses such as influenza, leptospirosis and dengue, which commonly spread during the rainy season.

Red and yellow alerts were raised for power grids in central and southern Philippines today as several power plants remained unavailable.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified post-disaster recovery efforts in the wake of tropical cyclones Luis and Maymay and the enhanced southwest monsoon. The PNP reported 26 weather-related fatalities till yesterday, including 25 civilians and one police officer.
