NEW DELHI/WASHINGTON:
India has joined the United States and 24 other countries in an international initiative intended to influence the security principles and development of sixth-generation telecommunications networks.
The “Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security” seeks cooperation on network security, interoperability, supply-chain resilience, innovation and competitiveness. India’s participation was announced following discussions involving Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick at the G20 Innovation Ministers’ Meeting.
The initiative is a policy-coordination framework, not a commercial agreement or deployment plan. It does not mean that operational 6G services are immediately available in India.
Sixth-generation networks remain under research and standardisation. Decisions taken during this stage could influence technical standards, equipment supply chains, spectrum planning, artificial intelligence integration and cybersecurity requirements for infrastructure expected to follow 5G.
India has sought a larger role in global telecommunications standards through the Bharat 6G programme and domestic research initiatives. Participation in an international framework may help Indian institutions and companies contribute to early technical and regulatory discussions.
The practical significance will depend on the commitments undertaken by participating governments, India’s representation in standards-setting bodies and whether research cooperation produces intellectual property or manufacturing opportunities for Indian organisations.
