The Sindh Assembly rejected an opposition demand for an independent commission to investigate an HIV outbreak, with treasury members voting down the proposed resolution.
The decision leaves the provincial government responsible for investigating a public-health emergency involving serious questions about unsafe medical practices, infection control, screening and regulatory oversight.
Government representatives defended their handling of the matter, while opposition legislators argued that an independent body was necessary to establish responsibility and restore public confidence.
