Sindh Assembly rejects independent inquiry into HIV outbreak

The demand for an external commission was defeated by treasury members despite continuing concern over healthcare failures.

KARACHI:

The Sindh Assembly rejected an opposition demand for an independent commission to investigate an HIV outbreak, with treasury members voting down the proposed resolution.

The decision leaves the provincial government responsible for investigating a public-health emergency involving serious questions about unsafe medical practices, infection control, screening and regulatory oversight.

Government representatives defended their handling of the matter, while opposition legislators argued that an independent body was necessary to establish responsibility and restore public confidence.

The assembly vote does not resolve the outbreak’s cause or determine whether institutional negligence occurred. Credible accountability would require patient-level data with privacy protections, tracing of transmission routes and disclosure of action against unsafe facilities or practitioners.

The next substantive development would be a detailed government investigation or judicial intervention compelling greater transparency.
