Russian forces have bombed a humanitarian aid centre in Ukraine, killing 26 people, as the United States announced plans to hold fresh peace talks. According to Ukrainian officials, the aid centre was located in a school in the village of Komyshuvakha, in the Zaporizhzhia region. The school had been closed to students because of its proximity to the front line. Instead, it had been serving as a shelter and a weekly humanitarian aid distribution point, where residents who remained in the village gathered every Monday to collect essential supplies.
Ukraine’s emergency services reported that two rescue workers and four police officers were among those killed. Five people, including two rescue personnel, were receiving hospital treatment. Regina Kharchenko, secretary of the Zaporizhzhia City Council, said 27 people remained missing. Police officers and emergency responders were working to reach residents believed to be trapped beneath the rubble. Russia had not immediately commented on the reported attack.
