Delhi elections 2025 marked the Congress party’s third straight duck in the national capital. The party, like in 2015 and 2020, failed to win even one of the 70 seats in the Assembly. The only Congress candidate who even came close to winning a seat was Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav.
Contesting from Badli constituency in North Delhi, Devender Yadav was up against AAP’s sitting MLA Ajesh Yadav and BJP’s Aahir Deepak Chaudharyy. Yadav was leading in early counting of votes on Saturday but his fortunes reversed around noon. Post that, BJP’s Chaudharyy took and maintained a strong lead.Devender Yadav was appointed to the post of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president in April 2024, two days after Arvinder Singh Lovely resigned from the post, criticising the party’s alliance with AAP in the general elections. He had previously served as Badli MLA from 2008 to 2013 and 2013 to 2015.
In the run-up to 2025 elections, Yadav had taken on Kejriwal directly, saying the former chief minister was “scared of the Congress’ poll guarantees” and thus changed the AAP candidates from Hari Nagar and Narela Assembly constituencies. “It also exposes the AAP’s non performance in the last 11 years as the party has been misleading the people with false promises,” Yadav had said.
He had also taken personal digs at the AAP national convenor, saying he wears “oversized shirts and broken slippers” to mislead the people.
