Dr. #ManmohanSingh, the former Prime Minister of India and renowned economist, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. He was undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (#AIIMS) in New Delhi due to ongoing health issues.
AIIMS confirmed the sad news, stating that Dr. Singh lost consciousness at his home on December 26. Immediate resuscitation measures were undertaken before he was brought to the hospital, where he was declared dead at 9:51 p.m.
Dr. Singh served as India’s #PrimeMinister from 2004 to 2014, and his tenure marked a period of significant transformation in India’s economic landscape. As Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996 under Prime Minister #PVNarasimhaRao, Dr. Singh was instrumental in introducing economic reforms that modernized India’s economy and integrated it into the global market.
During his two terms as Prime Minister, Dr. Singh’s government introduced critical legislative measures in areas such as #education, #foodsecurity, and #informationaccess. His policies contributed to the country’s rapid #economicgrowth and poverty alleviation, further strengthening India’s global standing.
Earlier this year, Dr. Singh retired from the #RajyaSabha after serving as a Member of Parliament for five terms, initially representing #Assam and later moving to #Rajasthan in 2019. He also held the position of Leader of the Opposition in the Upper House from 1998 to 2004.
Born on September 26, 1932, in #Punjab, Dr. Singh was an academic at heart. He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in #Economics from Panjab University before pursuing further studies at #CambridgeUniversity, where he completed his Economic Tripos in 1957. He then earned a #DPhil in #Economics from #OxfordUniversity in 1962.
Dr. Singh is survived by his wife #GursharanKaur and their three daughters.
