Amnesty International Flags Rights Concerns Ahead of PoJK Elections

With regional elections in Pákistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir scheduled for 27 July, Amnesty International has expressed concern over what it describes as a widening crackdown on dissent over the past 50 days.

According to the rights organisation, the region has witnessed internet shutdowns, mass arbitrary arrests and restrictions on movement, raising concerns over the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association.

Amnesty International has urged Pakistani authorities to:

Investigate allegations of unlawful use of force against protesters.

Fully restore internet services.

Release individuals arbitrarily detained for peacefully exercising their rights.

Lift the blanket ban on the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC).

The organisation has called on authorities to ensure that people can participate in the upcoming elections freely and without fear.
