Denmark to Ban Social Media for Under‑15s, Parents Can Approve 13‑14-Year-Olds

Denmark has announced plans to ban social media use for children under the age of 15, with exceptions allowed for those aged 13-14, subject to parental approval. The move is aimed at protecting the mental health of young people, and is expected to receive broad political support in parliament.

Digitalisation Minister Caroline Stage Olsen stated that social media is detrimental to children’s time and well-being. Popular platforms among Danish children include Snapchat, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, with children spending an average of two hours and 40 minutes daily online. The policy follows similar actions taken by Australia, which banned social media use for children under 16 years of age last year.
