Japan- Philippines agree to boost military cooperation to encounter China’s assertiveness

Japan and the Philippines have agreed to boost military cooperation amid mutual concern over China’s growing assertiveness in the region. Both countries have agreed to establish a strategic dialogue between the two militaries and a high-level framework for defence equipment and technology cooperation.

Speaking at a news conference to mark the conclusion of a two-day visit to the Philippines, Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani said both countries also agreed on the need to enhance cooperation to maintain peace and stability in the region. Japan and the Philippines, both allies of the United States through mutual defence treaties, have been among the strongest critics of Beijing’s attempts to assert control over the South China Sea, a vital waterway that handles approximately one-third of global trade.
