Khakee The Bengal Chapter review: Consistent, pacy, binge-worthy thriller

When it comes to a Neeraj Pandey project, certain elements are a given. Expect meticulously shot chase sequences, with the camera closely following the pursued, keeping you on the edge of your seat. Anticipate an intricate storyline that keeps you guessing and an intensity that ensures you remain glued to the screen. ‘Khakee: The Bengal Chapter’ is no exception, even though Pandey serves as the creator rather than the director. The added bonus is its stellar ensemble cast, featuring some of the biggest and most talented stars of the Bengali film industry, making this series utterly gripping and ideal for binge-watching.

Unlike ‘The Bihar Chapter’ (which courted controversy), ‘The Bengal Chapter’ is entirely fictional, granting the makers greater creative freedom with the narrative. Set in the 2000s, it delves into Bengal’s political landscape, where the ruling party is deeply entangled with the underworld. At the centre of it all is ‘philanthropist’ Barun Roy (Prosenjit Chatterjee), the true puppet master of the ruling party. Under his thumb are both the state’s most notorious gangster, Bagha (Saswata Chatterjee), and even the Chief Minister. Opposing them is a woman-led party [reiterating, the story is fictitious], headed by Nibedita Basak (Chitrangada Singh), who has her own motivations for entering politics.

However, Bagha remains unchallenged, thanks to his two trusted lieutenants, Sagor Talukdar (Ritwik Bhowmik) and Ranjit Thakur (Aadil Khan), ensuring the ruling party’s dominance remains unshaken.
