In Sri Lanka, the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has warned of a nationwide strike unless the government restores doctors’ holiday allowances to previous levels. GMOA Secretary Dr. Prabath Sugathadasa said the budgetary cuts introduced for 2025 were unacceptable, demanding immediate corrective measures. He warned that if the government did not respond positively, doctors would launch a strike .
In response, Health Minister Dr Nalinda Jayatissa urged doctors to avoid unreasonable trade union action that would inconvenience the public. Addressing the Parliament, he said the government had already granted the highest possible salary increase despite economic constraints. He also noted that both he and the President had engaged with the GMOA in discussions. The minister added that the government is open to further talks.
