US President Trump grants Mexico 90-day tariff extension

US President Donald Trump has given Mexico a 90-day extension to avoid a 30 per cent tariff on most non-automotive and non-metal goods, allowing more time to negotiate a broader trade deal. This came after a call between Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who confirmed the delay on social media.

About 85 per cent of Mexican exports meet the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) rules, protecting them from a 25 per cent fentanyl-related tariff. However, Trump said tariffs will remain 50 per cent on Mexican steel, aluminium and copper, and 25 per cent on autos or goods that do not meet USMCA rules. He also announced that Mexico agreed to remove many of its non-tariff trade barriers.
