US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said peace talks with Ukraine were constructive, but more work is needed to reach a deal to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
U.S. and Ukrainian officials held roughly four hours of talks yesterday in an effort to outline a possible endgame to the conflict, just days ahead of a planned visit by a U.S. envoy to Moscow for meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The discussions were held in Florida and were led by Rustem Umerov, Ukraine’s chief negotiator. US President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner were also present.
The talks come after a leaked 28-point US peace plan surprised Ukraine and its European allies because it seemed to favour Russia.
Rubio said the goal is not only to stop the fighting but to ensure Ukraine’s long-term security and prosperity. Umerov responded to Rubio said the US is listening and working beside Ukraine, but he offered no hints about what progress was made during the talks.
