Israel–Lebanon Peace Talks in Washington Raise Hopes for Ceasefire

Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors to the United States are set to meet today in Washington for talks aimed to seal potential ceasefire. The meeting will also be attended by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Israel’s ambassador to the US Yechiel Leiter will meet his Lebanese counterpart Nada Hamadeh Moawad.

Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji has said that the discussions should be used to work toward implementing a ceasefire and a broader peace agreement. However, Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah has called cancellation of meeting. Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem called on the Lebanese government to cancel the talks, describing the talks as pointless and vowing that the group will continue its retaliation against Israel.
