Exercise Shown to Be Key in Managing Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), Groundbreaking Study Reveals

A pioneering study led by Hirsh D. Trivedi at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in California underscores the critical role of exercise in managing Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), previously known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). MASLD, a growing concern globally, occurs when fat accumulates in the liver in individuals who consume little to no alcohol. It is commonly linked to conditions such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol levels.

The research, recently published in the esteemed Liver International journal, presents compelling evidence that exercise can provide significant benefits, even for those with advanced stages of liver disease, including cirrhosis — a condition characterized by severe liver scarring. The study highlights that beyond weight loss, regular physical activity has the potential to reduce liver fat, improve liver inflammation markers, and promote cardiovascular health, all of which are essential in managing MASLD.

In their findings, the researchers advocate for the prioritization of personalized exercise regimens for all MASLD patients, including those who are undergoing pharmacotherapy. “Exercise should be seen as an essential component of treatment, no matter the stage of liver disease,” said Jonathan G. Stine, one of the researchers involved in the study, in a post on the social media platform X. “Even those living with cirrhosis can safely and effectively engage in physical activity to improve their liver health.”

This groundbreaking study draws from a review of several pre-clinical and clinical studies, which collectively show a clear association between increased physical activity and reduced liver disease incidence. The team’s research also emphasizes that exercise can help improve insulin sensitivity, reduce fat buildup in the liver, and lower biomarkers of liver inflammation, all of which contribute to better overall health outcomes.

The researchers urge a shift towards an evidence-based, systematic approach to prescribing exercise for MASLD patients, particularly given the mounting evidence supporting its role as a non-pharmacological intervention. “Exercise will remain an essential tool in the management of MASLD, with strong evidence indicating its benefits at every stage of the disease,” the team concluded.

While the study calls for further research to refine specific exercise protocols tailored to MASLD patients, it firmly establishes the value of physical activity in managing liver health. The findings could potentially transform the approach to treating MASLD, providing patients with a holistic, effective, and non-invasive treatment option that complements traditional medical therapies.
