Tibetan Culture Under Siege: CTA Accuses China of Suppression in ‘Second Cultural Revolution’

The Central Tibetan Administration (#CTA), representing the Tibetan government in exile, has accused #China of deliberate attempts to erase the #TibetanLanguage and culture. In a statement released on Thursday, the CTA referred to these actions as a ‘second Cultural Revolution,’ citing measures such as removing Tibetan from educational systems and forced separation of children from their families.

China has allegedly been excluding Tibetan from university entrance exams, aligning with a broader strategy of cultural assimilation. Despite Beijing’s denials, the CTA claims these policies threaten the survival of Tibet’s rich heritage.

Since 2021, the Chinese government has intensified its crackdown on #TibetanLanguageSchools, particularly in monasteries. This effort escalated further in 2022, targeting specialized programs that preserve Tibet’s linguistic and cultural identity. These moves align with China’s 2024 white paper emphasizing Chinese national unity over ethnic diversity.

One alarming trend involves removing Tibetan children from their homes to attend state-run boarding schools where they are taught in Chinese and subjected to ‘Patriotic Education.’ This policy echoes earlier instances of unrest, such as the 2015 student uprising in #MalhoPrefecture against the imposition of Chinese-medium education.

The CTA warns these policies jeopardize Tibet’s unique traditions, including #TibetanMedicine, religious practices, and cultural heritage. The loss of linguistic and cultural autonomy poses an existential threat to Tibetan identity.

Tibet’s geopolitical conflict with China remains a contentious issue. Historically autonomous, Tibet’s status changed after the #ChineseArmy entered the region in 1950. Political unrest led to the 14th Dalai Lama’s exile in 1959. While China asserts that Tibet is an inseparable part of its territory, Tibetans continue to call for greater #Autonomy or outright independence.

The ongoing suppression of the Tibetan language and culture underscores deeper human rights concerns, including threats to religious freedom and cultural preservation. The CTA has called for global support to protect Tibet’s endangered heritage and safeguard the rights of its people.
