At the 60th Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Genèva, Sri Lanka received strong backing from a wide group of member states during the Interactive Dialogue on Sri Lanka held yesterday. Sri Lanka’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, in a press statement, said that Minister Vijitha Herath reaffirmed the government’s commitment to domestic processes for reconciliation, unity, and accountability. He urged the Council to allow Sri Lanka time and space to advance its reforms.
Forty-three countries spoke during the session, with India, China, Russia, Ethiopia, Egypt, Venezuela, the Maldives, Cuba, Türkiye, among others, as well as Kuwait on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council, expressing solidarity with Colombo.
These countries welcomed Sri Lanka’s engagement with the Council and noted progress in legislative reforms. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mr. Volker Türk, presenting his report, acknowledged his recent visit to Sri Lanka and exchanges with political leaders, religious figures, and civil society. The Council session continues until October 8.
