Bangladesh: ACC seeks to bring Sheikh Hasina back from India for trial

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has announced its intention to repatriate former prime minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina to face corruption charges.

During a press briefing at the Commission’s headquarters in Dhaka on Tuesday, ACC Director General (Prevention) Md Akhtar Hossain confirmed the development.

Addressing questions from journalists, Akhtar Hossain said that the ACC, in collaboration with the government and other law enforcement agencies, is actively working to bring Sheikh Hasina back from India, according to The Dhaka Tribune report.

“We are adhering to criminal procedural codes and other relevant legal frameworks to take the necessary steps,” the ACC official assured.

When asked about the legal feasibility of the move, he said: “It is possible under the law. All efforts will proceed within the bounds of legal provisions to accomplish this.”

The ACC filed two separate cases against Sheikh Hasina and her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, on January 1.

According to the case details, Hasina is accused of misusing her position as the head of government to influence the allocation of a 10-katha plot in the diplomatic zone of Purbachal New Town under Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk).

Despite already owning properties under Rajuk’s jurisdiction, she allegedly withheld this information in her affidavit to secure the plot.

The ACC further alleged that Hasina facilitated similar plot allocations for her children, sister, and her sister’s children by influencing officials from the Ministry of Housing and Public Works and Rajuk.

In a related case, Sheikh Hasina has been listed as a co-accused alongside her son, Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy.

The Commission had previously launched an investigation on December 26 into alleged irregularities in Rajuk plot allocations involving Sheikh Hasina and her family members.
