The water level of the Yamuna river in Delhi is continuously rising. Today, Thursday, at 7 am, it was recorded at 207.48 meters at the old railway bridge. Due to the rise in the river, flood water has entered many low-lying areas of Delhi. According to official data, the water level remained stable at 207.48 meters from 6 am to 7 am. Officials said that at 5 am it was 207.47 meters and it remained at this level from 2 am to 5 am.
The floodwaters moved towards the Delhi Secretariat, where the offices of the Chief Minister, Cabinet ministers and senior bureaucrats are located. Besides, areas around Vasudev Ghat have also been submerged. The rising water level of the Yamuna has badly affected areas like Yamuna Bazaar, Geeta Colony, Majnu Ka Tila, Kashmiri Gate, Garhi Mandu and Mayur Vihar, where residential and commercial buildings are located.
According to officials, more than 14,000 people have been evacuated to safer places so far. Relief and rescue operations are underway. Relief camps have been set up at ITO, Mayur Vihar and Geeta Colony for the affected people.
According to the Revenue Department, 8,018 people have been shifted to tents and 2,030 to 13 permanent shelters.
Flood water has also entered Delhi’s oldest and busiest Nigambodh Ghat, raising the possibility of disruption of the cremation process there. Water has also reached the Hanuman Baba temple near Kashmiri Gate, the Shri Marghat.
The flood control bulletin issued on Wednesday evening said that the water level at the old railway bridge will be 207.48 metres at 8 am on Thursday, but the water level of the river is likely to decrease after that.
The old railway bridge remains an important monitoring point to assess the flow of the Yamuna and the risk of flooding.
