Indian Ambassador Kwatra meets US lawmakers amid Donald Trump’s tariff policy

Indian Ambassador Vinay Kwatra has met US Congressman Gregory Meeks. This meeting is important because President Donald Trump’s tariff policy has also affected the trade relations between India and the US. Gregory Meeks is also a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives.

Information has emerged that Ambassador Vinay Kwatra discussed India-US relations with Gregory Meeks. Posting on the social media platform ‘X’, House Foreign Affairs Committee Democrats said that Meeks mentioned the Congress’ support for the US-India partnership over the last 25 years, especially through the Quad.

Gregory Meeks expressed concern over Donald Trump’s arbitrary tariffs that threaten this important partnership. At the same time, he reiterated his commitment to deeper ties with India.

Ambassador Vinay Kwatra also posted, “It was a privilege to meet Gregory Meeks, Senior Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and brief him on recent developments in bilateral relations. Our discussions focused on trade, energy, the Indo-Pacific, and broader issues of mutual interest.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Vinay Kwatra held talks with Republican Congresswoman from Florida Kat Cammack, focusing on strengthening bilateral ties based on shared values, at a time when India is dealing with Donald Trump’s ‘punitive’ policies.

US President Trump has imposed a 50 percent tariff on India. Trump accused India of imposing high tariffs on American goods and profiteering from Russian oil.

It is noteworthy that India has not changed its policy under US pressure and continues to buy oil from Russia. India has rejected the US demands and called the actions ‘unfair and unjust’.

At the same time, in the past few weeks, many US lawmakers have shown consistent support for India. In early August, Congressman Meeks said on Trump’s tariff policy that these steps could jeopardize years of hard work to strengthen India-US relations.

He also said that all concerns should be resolved with mutual respect and in accordance with democratic values.
