In Jammu and Kashmir, heavy rainfall since late last night in different parts of Jammu wreaked havoc and led to waterlogging, traffic snarls, and difficulties for daily commuters. All major rivers of the Jammu region, including Chenab, Tawi, Ravi and Ujh, are flowing above the danger mark. The Met department has predicted heavy rainfall till this afternoon across several districts of the Jammu region. Continuous heavy rainfall also disrupted traffic movement along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
The local Meteorological department has forecasted heavy rains over multiple districts of the Union Territory till the afternoon today, which, according to the officials, may trigger cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides and shooting stones like situation at many vulnerable places.
From today afternoon, there will be generally cloudy with one or two spells of light to moderate rain/thunder at many places with possibility of rain/thunder over Kathua, Jammu, Udhampur and Reasi districts with ‘moderate to heavy’ rainfall over Doda, Samba, Rajouri, Poonch, Ramban and Kishtwar districts till late afternoon today. From September 4 to 7, there is a possibility of rain/thunder at a few places in J&K.
The weather department said that in the meantime, there is a possibility of cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides and shooting stones at many vulnerable places. The general public has been advised to stay away from water bodies, nallas, river embankments and loose structures, etc. However, the pilgrimage to the holy cave shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji shall remain suspended for the ninth consecutive day today owing to persistent bad weather conditions, as continuous rainfall and landslide threats have made the route unsafe for pilgrims, prompting authorities to keep the yatra on hold.
Meanwhile, traffic movement along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway shall remain suspended for the second consecutive day today for commuter safety amid land sinking, landslides and shooting stones at multiple places along the highway. The highway was partially restored on Monday after six days of closure. Commuters have been advised not to travel on the route without confirming the latest status. Meanwhile, all Government and Private educational institutions across the Jammu region shall also remain closed for today in view of the continuing inclement weather conditions. All exams scheduled for today are also postponed.
