Punjab is battling the worst floods, having claimed 29 lives so far since August 1st. The lives have been lost in all 12 affected districts. A maximum of 6 deaths have occurred in the border district of Pathankot, with reports of 3 missing persons. Our Jalandhar Correspondent reports, over 2.46 lakh people have been affected, with 1.45 lakh in Gurdaspur alone. Over 15 thousand 600 persons have been evacuated. Widespread rain in the state has added to the woes of people.
According to meteorologist Pawneet Kaur Kingra, the continuous rain has broken the records of the last 55 years in the state. Thousands of acres of land have been inundated, and hundreds of livestock have also been killed. Amritsar, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala and Tarn Taran, Patiala and Jalandhar are also affected due to overflowing of Ghaggar, Tangri and Markanda rivers and release of water from Ropar. Asserting that Punjab is facing the worst floods in recent history, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has assured all help to the affected people to bail them out in this hour of crisis.
