Switzerland to vote in referendum on capping population at 10 million

Switzerland is set to vote in a referendum today on limiting its population size. Swiss voters will decide whether to cap the country’s population at 10 million. If the proposal passes, Switzerland would become the first European country to set a limit on its population.

The current population stands at just over 9 million, up from 8.3 million a decade ago. More than a quarter of its residents are foreign-born. The proposal for a cap was put forward by the country’s largest political grouping, Swiss People’s Party. The proposal could have far-reaching consequences for the economy and Bern’s relations with the European Union.
