US plans to raise tariffs on EU cars and trucks to 25 percent

US President Donald Trump said he will raise tariffs on imports of cars and trucks from the European Union (EU) to 25 percent, escalating sharp trade tensions with Brussels. Mr. Trump accused the EU of failing to comply with a trade agreement, though he did not specify the violations, and urged European automakers to move production to the United States.

The move comes less than a year after the EU and US agreed a deal at Mr. Trump’s Turnberry golf course in, which set levies on most European goods at 15 percent.

The European Commission said it is meeting its commitments and is seeking clarification from Washington, adding it will keep its options open to protect EU interests.
