Hundreds were feared dead and injured in an earthquake of magnitude 6 that struck Afghanistan’s rugged northeastern province of Kunar, last night.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake was recorded 27 kilometres east-northeast of Jalalabad at 0047 hrs IST at a depth of 8 kilometres. About 20 minutes later, Nangarhar province experienced another tremor, registering a magnitude of 4.5 at a depth of 10 kilometres.
Taliban government officials have urged aid organisations to help in rescue efforts in the remote mountainous areas.
The quake was felt across Pakistan and northern India — including Delhi-NCR.
