Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with Donald Trump for the first time since the latter took charge as US President for a second term, sources aware of the development told
“Delighted to speak with my dear friend President Donald Trump. Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security,” said PM Modi in an X post.
Prime Minister Modi last spoke to Trump on November 7 last year, the day the Republican leader achieved a sweeping victory in the US Presidential Elections.
Trump was sworn in as the President succeeding Joe Biden during a grand inauguration event at the US Capitol in Washington on January 20, which saw several dignitaries, including former presidents and billionaire entrepreneurs.
PM Modi congratulated his “dear friend”, saying he wanted New Delhi and Washington to work closely together.
“Congratulations my dear friend President @realDonaldTrump on your historic inauguration as the 47th President of the United States! I look forward to working closely together once again, to benefit both our countries and to shape a better future for the world. Best wishes for a successful term ahead,” said PM Modi in an X post.
Notably, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar represented India at Donald Trump’s inauguration event. Invited by the US State, he carried a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Trump.Soon after assuming the office, Trump signed a batch of executive orders aimed at overhauling US immigration, and the H1-B visas that allow companies to bring foreigners with specific qualifications to the United States.
India is among the largest sources of legal migration into the United States, but tens of thousands of Indians have also entered the country illegally in recent years by crossing the Canadian and Mexican borders.
